The Centre so close

The A17 – Coastline Center Highway serves a strongly potential touristic region.

Leiria

Accompanied by the sound of River Lis’ whispering, Leiria opens its living room, from Baixa to Castelo, for a pleasant walk and full of history.

Land of varied gastronomy and known traditions, it is an historically rich county, as the Castelo and the Santuário de Nossa Senhora da Encarnação can testify.

If you enjoy the beach and the countryside, here is an irresistible offer for you: alongside the Pinhal de Leiria, between the Praia do Pedrógão and São Pedro de Moel, you will find nearly 20 kilometres of sand beaches, some almost deserted, where the dunes blend with the surrounding pine tree forest.

If this is your destination, know that Leiria is close to the historical cities of Ourém, Fátima, Pombal and Coimbra.

Marinha Grande

The Marinha Grande is traditionally known for its glass industry that exists for over 250 years. In that context, in 1998 the Museu do Vidro was inaugurated, in the Palácio Stephens, a neoclassic inspired building, built in the second half of the XVIII century. It is the only museum specifically dedicated to the art study, crafts and glass industry in Portugal.

Monte real

Monte Real is a place where past and future blend. Up in the village there is a dolomitic hill, where Rei D. Dinis and his wife Rainha Santa Isabel were established, during the Leiria Pine Tree Forest plantation and the Campos do Ulmar construction work. Monte Real is still very well known for its baths. Located in the Leiria Pine Tree Forest, it is the right resort for those who wish to combine the time for rest and cure with leisure and cultural tourism.

Figueira da Foz

The Claridade beach, or the Relógio beach as it is also called, is still one of the most endless of the country, standing firm as the Figueira da Foz city postcard image. Endless meters of soft white sand that, with the sun’s reflection, acquire an unique clarity, hence the name. It is the largest European urban beach, with sports and leisure equipments, and its the one who welcomes us as one arrives at Figueira da Foz, framing perfectly the “marginal” of the city. Figueira da Foz its one most important touristic centres of the country, with the oldest casino of all the Iberian Peninsula, and the only one in the centre region, with a busy nocturnal life to be highlighted.

Quiaios

Quiaios is best know by its endless beach. Inserted in a landscape that combines vast vegetation with broad sand area, the Quiaios beach has been sought by surfers for the favorable surfing conditions, as well as it is sought for naturism in the hidden areas amongst the dunes.

The Quiaios beach perfect harmony, with its long wooden walkway going through the beach dunes, linking them to the infrastructures for the bathers, and with the serra of Boa Viagem, make this a unique and worth visiting place.

Mira

The remains of ancient evidence of human life in the Mira county, go back to primordial eras. From the roman era, it was found some construction work materials, namely “tegulae” (roof tiles) and domestic ceramics. In the muslim period, it is believed that many conflicts between christians and arabs took place in this district, when they took over Coimbra and the surrounding areas.

The county’s extensive bicycle and pedestrian track is to be noted. Its construction began in 2000, having even received an honourable mention in the environment category. Nowadays, it measures over 28km, that goes through agricultural areas, lagoons (Barrinha e Lagoa de Mira), water courses, forests, woods, swamps, dunes, beaches and other of the county’s characteristic habitats.

Additionally, Mira has six other patrimony interpretation pedestrian tracks. They can be found in the traditional paths and partially associated to the bicycle and pedestrian track. These are an exceptional way to discover the natural countryside and promote a close interaction with the environment and cultural aspects of the territory, encouraging the sustainable development and patrimony preservation.

Aveiro

Portuguese Venice, art nouveau queen, land of “ovos moles" (soft eggs). There are more than many common-places when speaking of Aveiro, but there are so much more to discover. And you can do it by walk or travelling by “moliceiro” (local boats)! Walking through the streets, by the river, and blending with the busy life of the traditional commerce, is a walk worth doing. To gain a deeper knowledge about the city, you can always visit the museum in the Jesus monastery.

You are in the right place to surrender yourself to the food pleasures. Pass by Costa Nova and delight yourself with the fish and shellfish, extra fresh. To finish, enjoy some “ovos moles”, of course.
